WiDS Edinburgh is an independent event that aligns with the annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide Conference, taking place at Stanford University and over 200 other locations globally. Scheduled for May 15th, 2023, the event will be hosted at Heriot-Watt University’s Riccarton Campus in Edinburgh, and welcomes individuals of all genders to attend and participate in the informative and inspiring sessions.

Invited Speakers

Jackie Caldwell

Employed with Public Health Scotland and its precursor organisation Information Services Division (ISD being part of NHS National Services Scotland). First joined the National Health Service in 1991 following work as a Software Support and Development Manager with a multi national, various systems analyst positions in the commercial and then the public sector. Jackie works as an Information consultant in eDRIS.

Where her role includes the following tasks either solely or in conjunction with colleagues:

· Strategic Lead for Scottish Medical Imaging Service ISD Services | Electronic Data Research and Innovation Service (eDRIS) | Contact | ISD Scotland

· Lead on complex and novel applications Statistical Disclosure Control approval for release of files from the National Safe Haven

· Sign-out of data for release into the National Safe Haven or for some other approved route

· Line manager for team managers and escalation point for staffing matters

· Member of PHS Ethics Committee

Ewa Luger

Professor Ewa Luger holds a personal chair in Human-Data Interaction, is Director of Research Innovation for Edinburgh College of Art and Co-Director of the Institute of Design Informatics. She is also Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute. In research terms, her work explores applied ethical issues and intelligibility of complex data-driven systems, with a particular interest in distribution of power, spheres of exclusion and consent. She is also recipient of University Chancellor’s Award (2020) for ‘Rising Star’ in research and impact.

Ewa is a member of the Leadership Circle for the Scottish Government’s AI Alliance delivering the AI strategy for Scotland. She also sits on Facebook’s Algorithms and Public Interest expert advisory group and the Programme Advisory Board (PAB) for EPSRC’s Digital Economy theme. Ewa worked with the WEF on human-centred inclusion policy and the expert taskforce on trusted data intermediaries. She has also co-led development of UoE’s first Data Ethics and Responsible Innovation MOOC through Bayes (2019), now hosted by EFI.
